Max Devore confronts Mike by phone

Bag of Bones

Max Devore confronts Mike by phone when a call interrupts Mike’s Fourth of July evening at Sara Laughs. The exchange turns Maxwell’s concern for his granddaughter into an effort to control who may speak with her, while Mike’s refusal to submit converts an unexpected call into an open personal conflict.

Background and Interruption

Mike is alone at Sara Laughs, preparing to endure the holiday without Jo. He remembers the summers when he and Jo watched Castle Rock’s fireworks from the deck, but chooses to watch the display without her and tries to get through the loneliness. As the first burst goes off, the phone rings. Mike assumes it may be Bill Dean checking in; instead, the caller is an elderly man whose raspy voice identifies him as Maxwell Devore.

The timing gives the call a pointed contrast: beyond Mike’s deck, the fireworks continue as a communal celebration, while the voice on the line pulls him into a private confrontation. Mike recognizes Maxwell as the wealthy Devore family patriarch, and the local under-hum on the telephone line suggests that he is nearby on the TR rather than calling from Palm Springs, as Mike had assumed.

The Accusation

Maxwell opens by saying he understands that Mike met his daughter-in-law that day, then says he has heard there was an incident. His stated concern is Kyra, his granddaughter. He accuses Mattie of allowing her attention to wander, presenting his criticism of Mattie as an explanation for his intervention and as a claim to authority over the situation.

Mike tries to establish what Maxwell means without volunteering information. When Maxwell insists that Mike was seen talking to Mattie and Kyra, Mike confirms only that he spoke to a woman and a little girl. He offers evasive possibilities about the encounter, including that they might have been gathering wildflowers, and says his memory is unclear. The qualifications are deliberate: Mike recognizes that he is effectively answering as if under examination, although he is sitting on his own deck.

Maxwell cuts through the pretense with a direct accusation of lying. Mike, in turn, identifies him as the computer magnate Devore, and Maxwell confirms the identification. The caller’s anger is no longer disguised by the language of concern. His repeated effort to make Mike account for a brief conversation reveals the coercive pressure beneath his professed solicitude for Kyra.

Refusal and Immediate Effect

Mike answers Maxwell’s accusation by refusing the terms of the conversation. He says he is not accustomed to evening calls from men he does not know and will not prolong a call in which the caller has called him a liar. Maxwell presses him with a question about why he stopped, and Mike offers the Village Cafe as his reason for being in the area. He then tells Maxwell that, although he does not know how the man obtained his unlisted number, he knows where he can put it, and ends the call.

The rebuff does not leave Mike untouched. After disconnecting, he stares at the phone; his hand trembles, and his heart pounds hard enough for him to feel it in his neck and wrists as well as his chest. He wonders whether he would have dared speak so bluntly if he had not had several million dollars in the bank. His bodily reaction makes clear that defiance is not the same as fearlessness, and that his financial position may have helped him risk the insult.

Significance

The call makes Maxwell’s hostility toward Mike immediate and personal. A chance meeting with Mattie and Kyra is enough to bring an angry patriarch onto Mike’s unlisted line, where he demands an account and tries to frame Mattie as negligent. Mike’s resistance changes the encounter from an inquiry into a contest over dignity and intimidation: he refuses Maxwell’s authority to interrogate him, even as his shaking hand registers the threat he has just challenged.

The fireworks provide an ironic backdrop to the confrontation. Mike had chosen them as a painful reminder of his life with Jo; Maxwell’s call redirects the evening toward the custody conflict gathering around Mattie and Kyra. The exchange establishes that the conflict will not remain a distant family dispute: Maxwell is willing to intrude directly, and Mike has answered him directly in return.
